FreeSpace 2 is considered one of the greatest space fighter games of all time, and for good reason. There were huge ships in FreeSpace 2 and fast fighters. Their interaction felt like something straight out of the movies and was the catalyst for many of the sci-fi action sim style games that followed.

Unfortunately FreeSpace 3 was never developed because THQ brought Volition, the creators of FreeSpace, and the refusal of Interplay, the publisher of FreeSpace, to push FreeSpace in favor of its own game Descent: FreeSpace. So Volition open sourced the FreeSpace engine where the staff at The Babylon Project decided to write a Babylon 5 game using the FreeSpace engine.

The Babylon Project features a whopping 120 ships from the Babylon series with the Earth, Centauri, Vorlon, and eight other races.

You can download user created campaigns and plenty of single player missions. The game featires many of the famous capital ships from the Babylon universe.

The game also has multiplayer support. Although the official FreeSpace 2 servers are long gone, you can still play online on other free servers available at the Babylon Project.

In terms of graphics and textures, the game doesn't compare to newer games like X3 Reunion. But the Bablyon Project started in 2000 by a staff of programmers as a hobby. The sounds are from the TV show and very good.

The current version of the Bablyon Project is 3.4b and it's a huge 750MB to download so you can find it here. You do not need the original FreeSpace 2 to play it. It's a great game for fans of space sims like the old Wing Commander series or Babylon fans. Seeing these ships in actual combat is a real treat and worth the download, especially considering the project is still active and producing new content.
