Bioshock is set in the 1960s as you play Jack, a plane crash survivor who discovers an underwater city stuck in the 1940s. Unfortunately, some sort of experimental disaster has turned the entire population into mutants known as Splicers. Your job is to help what appears to be the only survivor of the city recover his family who he says is still alive. In exchange, he'll help you escape.
The city is called Rapture and was created by rich man Andrew Ryan as a society without the boundaries of government or religion where man can achieve without restraint. Andrew fills Rapture with the world's most deviant scientists because you'll meet some of these weirdos as the game progresses. You'll also learn more about yourself. There are giant armored monsters called Big Daddies that guard children called Little Sisters who harvest the genetic material from dead Splicers.
You can buy genetic material from vending machines that give you all sorts of powers like flame, electricity, and telekinesis or get it from the Little Sisters if you don't mind a fight with the Big Daddies. You'll need these powers to solve puzzles and defeat the mutated bosses. You have to be very careful in Rapture because there is a limited supply of weapons and resources. This means that most of the time, you have to beat your enemies to death with a wrench because it doesn't cost you anything.
The game has incredible graphics with the best textures and excellent animation on a PC. The characters are very detailed and very weird. There's plenty of lighting effects and scary moments. The city of Rapture isn't just a bunch of levels glued together, but it's actually a fully realized city. The music is spectacular and matches the eerie environment. If you're a fan of the 1940s, you'll love the music. The voice acting and sound effects are top notch.
It's a completely single player experience that will last 8 to 10 hours. The replay value is limited because once you've finished the game, there aren't that many surprises left. the game also has many bugs and requires a hefty gaming rig. But in terms of gameplay, graphics, sound, and story, Bioshock is one of the best in the PC library of games.
